beating in all the wrong places

she can feel it in her fingertips
hear it dancing up her vertebrae
and taste a metal pulse between her teeth

surely it isn’t healthy

that she is
flickering everywhere

while her chest 
is painfully
empty

I’m trying to suck status
through the tip of my cigarette,
pulling popularity through the filter
and letting it invade my lungs;
the oxygen fights against the
facade as it falls through my
throat with surprising density.
The weight of acceptance crashes
unfamiliarly on my tongue and
is exhaled with a sexiness that
doesn’t fit my skin quite right.
This isn’t my first drag and
I don’t think I’ll see the last;
it feels too good, letting my
own breath become toxic.
